i backed up my entire facebook information and wasted hours on some issues that i had to figure out myself because i can't find the solution on the web. hopefully this article will help someone who faces similar problems.
there's 3 important things you need to know (these time saving info are not available on the web):
1. never download using google chrome. download using firefox because firefox is 5 times faster. my 5gb data took 2 hours to download using chrome while it only took 20 minutes using firefox (i have no idea why but it's mind boggling)
2. unzip the downloaded file(s) and make sure index.htm exists and make sure there is no file with a .enc extension. if there is no index.htm OR there is a .enc file, that is a bad download so you need to request another file. note do not just download again. you have to delete the "available files" and request another one. it takes around half a day for your request to be available for download.
3. if the download fails because of any internet connection related error, right-click and choose "resume". if "resume" does not work even if you have good internet connection, that means the "available file" for download is bad so you need to request another file. retrying the download is just a waste of time because you will encounter the same error.
that's all you need to know. the rest you can figure out yourself or find in the internet. the rest of this article is just rambling.
there is no difference in size between the zipped file and the unzipped files. so for quicker access later on, i backed up my entire facebook data (to my terabyte external drive and to 8gb dvd) already unzipped.
after unzipping, you can browse your entire facebook data by double clicking index.htm. i actually love it - you can easily browse all your posts, chats, albums, etc ... it can be useful for those whose facebook posts are interesting or educational like my high school classmate paeng ruflo who post very educational information on ignored but very interesting historical sights of cebu. he can just give the downloaded file to a publisher and it would be easy for the publisher to compile his posts into a nice coffee table book (which would take forever if the publisher has to browse in facebook). i actually plan to visit these "ignored gems" someday when i'm done solving all the problems of my grandparent's estate.
note your downloaded file does not have any security or privacy mechanism so any hacker or malware that has access to the file can retrieve any info contained in the downloaded file. so you might wanna delete the file from your computer after securing the backup disk or dvd if it contains sensitive information or you are an important person. as for me i'm just a nobody so i will actually be honored if someone tries to steal my information even if it gets me in trouble.
actually the reason why i back up my entire facebook once a year is because i fear i will banned from facebook or my account will be locked or disabled. if that happens there is no one to blame but me because my facebook posts are so disgusting and offensive. i don't know why i do something even if i know it's wrong. i was hoping i have a mental illness but my psychiatrist told me i don't have any mental illness. that means i'm just a purely evil person. when i watched game of thrones i had this delusion that my character fits that of tyrion lannister but in reality i'm like ramsay bolton.
(search "ian's knowledge bombs" on the web and browse the table of contents for any article that interests you. ENJOY !!!)
