the following video is an introduction to barrio golf: intro-to-barrio-golf
the barrio golf book contains everything anyone needs to know to play barrio golf including how to build the facility and how to play the game. it also contains a brief introduction to golf. the book has been exported to a blog article in bit.ly/barrio-golf-book
if you already know how to play golf, there is nothing else you need to learn to play and enjoy barrio golf. a barrio golf director can setup all the apparatus, guide the players, and do the scoring.
barrio golf directors can be trained by simply watching the following training video a few times: (link to training video, coming soon). a barrio golf director does not need any background in golf. students and housewives living near the facility who can benefit from the extra income can become barrio golf directors.
project goals
- allow everyone in the world to enjoy and master golf
- promote health awareness
- life coaching
the barrio golf project is not for profit and we don't accept any donations. if you wish to support the project, you can adopt a barrio by donating a barrio golf facility. the estimate cost is P15,000 ($300). complete and detailed information on constructing a barrio golf facility including sourcing of materials and equipment is in the barrio golf book/article.
barrio golf is non political. everyone is welcome to support the project regardless of political affiliation.
thesis
man does not live by bread alone. many people need a sport or hobby. many people need to keep learning some form of art or music to be happy. sadly, the younger generations have replaced popular art and music hobbies such as GUITAR playing with social media and video games. experts say that social media and video games do not really contribute to the physical and mental health development of a person. in fact, they can even have a negative impact.
the trick is to make technology work for you, not against you. example, try learning the guitar or piano. a keyboard is quite affordable to the filipino masses nowadays. there are so many free guitar and piano tutorials in youtube. first, have fun learning the basic chords, then play the simple versions of your FAVORITE SONGS.
you don't need to be talented. the important thing is you keep learning little by little and you have FUN. don't worry if you are having a hard time learning twinkle twinkle little star while a 5 year old kid can play chopin's etude like a concert pianist. being better than you were yesterday is more important than being the best in the world. just look at the many rock stars and rap stars who are battling drug abuse and depression. they are not happy because although they are already the best in the world, although they have all the money in the world, although they have all the fame and love in the world, they have no FEELING of PROGRESS anymore.
some people also need to play a sport. golf is the most ADDICTIVE sport. michael jordan and steph curry even say they enjoy golf more than basketball. there was even this one time when michael jordan played 36 holes of golf even if he had a critical playoff game that night. mj fans know he is very disciplined and would do anything to win but his addiction to golf still got the best of him. even justin beiber was caught on camera urinating on the golf course. he decided not to go to the restroom because he was too excited to hit his next shot.
most fads such as karaoke, clubbing, ballroom dancing, etc ... fade away. but golf has stood the test of time. many BILLIONAIRES who have everything and can do anything they want would rather play golf. they own private jets, super yachts, sports cars, and high class resorts. but they enjoy golf more than anything.
the problem is that golf is too expensive for the filipino masses. fortunately, there is barrio golf, which allows the filipino masses to ENJOY and MASTER the important skills of golf. imagine you can enjoy and master the sport of billionaires even if you are just a regular person living in the barrio. the pleasure in golf doesn't really come from the beauty of the golf course. the pleasure in golf comes from the feeling you get when you hit the ball with the sweet spot of the clubhead. you can experience that same pleasure inside a barrio golf hitting cage. the pleasure in golf also comes from the thrill and excitement when competing against your friends. playing barrio golf with your friends can be just as thrilling and exciting as playing on the golf course.
barrio golf can increase the chance that a phenom is discovered, and increases the chance that the philippines will win more OLYMPIC and asian game medals. if a phenom is discovered in a barrio golf tournament, the government or philanthropists can financially support the phenom to train in military base golf courses.
right now, the most popular sport in the philippines is BASKETBALL. but unlike basketball where filipinos have a huge DISADVANTAGE in size and athleticism, full blooded filipino golfers such as dorothy delasin have beaten the top players in the world many times.
i think the reason why filipinos love basketball is because anyone can enjoy practicing or shooting hoops alone. the feeling of the ball swishing in the net is very therapeutic. but barrio golf is also something that anyone can practice alone at home, and the feeling of hitting a good shot is even more therapeutic and even addictive. barrio golf can be just as exciting and thrilling as basketball. but instead of just being a spectator, anyone can actually join a tournament and win.
the great thing with golf is unlike basketball, NOBODY ever gets BENCHED. because of the handicapping system, anyone regardless of talent or skill level can WIN as long as they play their best game. unlike other sports where you need to coordinate with other people to enjoy the game, you can enjoy golf anytime at home. unlike other sports where you need a big space to play, barrio golf can be played and mastered in a space 4 meters wide, 6 meters long, and 3 meters high.
imagine you are from the barrio and you pass by a golf course. normally, you would think golf is only for the rich ELITES. but after discovering barrio golf and having fun practicing my simplified techniques for only a year, you pass by the same golf course, but this time you feel that sense of SELF ESTEEM and confidence that you can probably beat 95% of the golfers playing on that course even if they have been playing golf all their life. that's because golf has been around for 500 years, but no one has really figured out how to teach an average golfer to play a satisfactory game or par most of the holes. but i think i have figured it out.
if you want to QUICKLY learn golf, read and practice the instant gratification chapter of my tutorial https://bit.ly/golf-on-rails. after a year, you can beat 95% of the golfers who've been playing for many years.
even if you are just a BARRIO GOLFER and never played on a golf course, if your boss at work happens to be a golfer and invites you to play, you can already play a decent game and your boss will be very impressed. you might even get a promotion :-)
barrio golf ECOSYSTEM can spread to barrio golf bars or night clubs. they can become the next karaoke bars. the waiters and waitresses in the barrio golf bars can sideline as GI or golf instructors to tourists and call center agents. they can be the next DI (dance instructors) that helped alleviate the economic sufferings of many of my dear friends a few decades ago.
GOLF BARS are also starting to be popular (also called screen golf, digital golf, or indoor golf). imagine if you take your friends or girlfriend to one of these golf bars. they will be shocked at how good you are at golf especially if you play against rich golfer dudes and you win. the rich people will be impressed and maybe they will give you good job opportunities.
people in the golf bar will surely want to talk to you because they will be very curious about your very UNORTHODOX swing technique. if you read the engineering section of my book, you can have fun talking to people for hours and hours explaining the general principles that apply to all swing techniques. you might even end up working in the bar as a waiter/waitress and part time instructor to call centers and korean tourists.
when a barrio golfer works in JAPAN, they can save enough money to buy a nice townhouse in cebu that gives them playing rights to liloan golf course. they can enjoy playing golf when they retire. golf is very popular in japan so they will impress their boss with their golf skill even if they just originated from a humble barrio in the philippines.
the rest of this article contains plans and ideas for the project presented in informal or brainstorming style. the ideas may repeat and even conflict with each other.
project roadmap and strategies
a barrio golf channel in youtube will be created. the contents of the channel will be composed mainly of the following:
- the barrio golf book (https://ian-crystal.blogspot.com/2020/04/barrio-golf.html)
- the 50-page instant gratification chapter of my golf tutorial (https://ian-crystal.blogspot.com/2020/03/golf-on-rails.html)
- health awareness: https://ian-crystal.blogspot.com/2020/10/make-filipinos-healthy-again.html
- motivation/inspiration videos
- life coaching and life hacks (e.g.https://ian-crystal.blogspot.com/2018/08/fun-way-for-a-slum-kid-to-be-rich.html, https://ian-crystal.blogspot.com/2015/01/my-mini-life-hacks.html etc ...)
i am confident barrio golf will spread like wildfire in the country and eventually all over the world because golf is very addictive. hitting a good shot even inside a barrio golf hitting cage will cause a pleasurable explosion of dopamine in your brain.
it will probably take a year for me to complete the video tutorials or step by step lessons. one episode or video can be dedicated to just learning about angles and how to easily visualize and estimate 90 degrees, 45 degrees, 22 degrees, 120 degrees, etc ... the barrio golf channel does not have to be entertaining. the instructions and lessons just needs to be clear, easy to understand, organized, efficient, and complete.
after all the tutorial videos are completed, i will recruit male and female school students to be social media influencers. they can create their own separate youtube channel, instagram, or facebook reels. they should be sports minded and driven - preferably a varsity player in any sport. they should also be popular campus figures, meaning many in the school have a crush on them. the reason for this is that i believe the influencer needs to possess charisma or star power for barrio golf to become popular. it should be easy to find them because they are already popular in their school. the big possibility of them becoming internet superstars should be enough to motivate them. and unlike most internet stars who are merely entertainers, they could help make filipinos healthy again.
it would be easy to teach my vloggers because they just have to watch the video tutorials. no need for me to hold seminars and training sessions. i will give financial incentives to pump up their motivation. my unorthodox swing technique may look horrible. but it actually makes golf easier and quicker to learn. my vloggers don't need to become very good golfers - they just need to learn enough to hit good shots because the mock games and challenges will be scripted.
when these campus figures post in facebook something as simple as "i'm sleepy, good night everyone", they easily get a thousand likes and hundreds of comments such as "i'm sleepy too", or "i hope you sleep well". so imagine what will happen if these campus figures post or share their barrio golf videos in facebook. the video could be a guy vs girl type of drama where they play 9 holes of barrio golf and bet P100. the guy would add a comment "it call came down to the last putt. if i made that putt i would have won our P100 bet". on her fb, the girl would do some trash talking and make fun of the guy. imagine the excitement and curiosity of their fans and admirers watching the videos.
imagine how many will attend if they announce there will be a club membership registration and demo event in the school or barangay gymn this weekend where the attendees can also try hitting golf balls in the barrio golf hitting cage. that would be an event full of fun and laughter at the newbies hitting terrible shots. newbies who are lucky enough to hit the ball with the sweet spot of the clubhead will be instant converts due to the avalanche of dopamine in their brain.
i will also train my vloggers to become motivational speakers, ala "mavs phenomenal basketball".
the barrio golf channel won't be a subscriber model. the plan is to create all the videos, then start going to the barrios to install a hitting cage and donate the golf clubs and balls to the barrio officials. the hitting cage will have a big sign showing the youtube channel they can go to learn everything they need to get started and play barrio golf. all the information in the barrio golf book will be in the youtube channel.
i will also recruit vloggers or influencers that will target the call center demographic.
when the barrio golf influencers and vloggers starts to gain traction, barrio golf will be promoted further via facebook ads. the adopt a barrio program will be promoted by posting to the various pinoy golf communities in facebook.
there can be many different clubs, modelled after the Japenese Karate Association/arnis/doce pares martial arts clubs. anyone can start a golf club in a barrio, school or company. however, some clubs can opt to not have classes or training sessions. the club memebers can just learn independently at their practice cage at home via the books or video tutorials in the barrio golf channel. they can just meet weekly to play a mini tournament.
the channel will even include a tutorial on how to organize barrio golf tournaments. i will develop an app that handles the handicapping system. only scores from weekly mini tournaments can be entered in the handicapping system. only a club leader or secretary can enter a score in the system. i'm sure local officials such as the barangay captain or councilors will be happy to sponsor barrio golf tournaments. photos of them handing out the awards will surely be posted on facebook which is good publicity for them.
it should be emphasized in the barrio golf doctrine that no barrio golf club or individual should request to play on a golf course. golf clubs and golf courses are usually for privacy and exclusivity for the members and that has to always be respected. if barrio golfers are invited to play on a golf course, they should show thanks and gratitude and should make an extra effort to follow the rules and etiquettes. a video on golf course rules and etiquette will be included in the barrio golf youtube channel. most likely there will be many barrio golfers who are also golf course players who can serve as a guide and mentor to the clubs.
motivation and inspiration
my vloggers will be in some of the videos in the barrio golf channel. they will tell motivational stories of gangster rappers such as macklemore who won a grammy award but then got into drug problems. but when he tried golf he got addicted to golf and reformed his life.
the vloggers will also explain some theories on why golf is important to the well being of humans. their source will basically be the introduction chapters of the barrio golf book and my golf tutorial.
the motivation videos will include how barrio golf will benefit our society. example, it's the philippine's best chance to win more medals in the olympics or asian games. barrio golf can discover exceptional talents or phenoms in golf who can be sponsored by the government or philanthropists to play in military golf courses. and of course include success stories of filipino golfing legends such as dottie delasin, yuka sako, frankie minoza, jason day, etc ...
call center barkadas might be tired of their annual trips to boracay or palawan. the barrio golf channel will include an episode that promotes call center barkada golf trip/historical trip/food trip and theme park fun trip to manila. the video will show how they can enjoy a relaxing and luxurious boat ride to manila. they can stay in one of the many budget hotels at the heart of the famous chinese food trip district in binondo. they can play golf nearby for only P1,500 at intramurous. they can imagine they are crisostomo ibarra or maria clara and take a pasig river cruise. they can strengthen their patriotic spirit by touring intramuros and luneta. they can witness the many wonders of nature in the nearby ocean park and manila zoo. they can also experience super thrilling coaster rides in star city.
barrio golf is also a perfect past time for workers on ocean ships. a time will come when you hear someone say, "you are a seaman? you must be good at golf".
barrio golf can help our economy
as filipinos climb up the economic ladder, call center agents, nurses, cops, etc ... would prefer simulation golf. with rising demand, the cost of simulation golf bars will decrease and grow like weeds all over, just like karaoke bars.
china will start mass producing more affordable golf clubs and golf balls. or with the advent of 3d printers, golf equipment making cottage industries can sprout around the country and boost our economy.
a rising tide lifts all boats. therefore high end brands such as titleist and taylormade would benefit from the cottage industries because as barrio golfers move up the economic ladder, they would prefer better brands. simulation golf tournaments can draw in huge price money from corporate sponsors such as trackman and nike.
back in silicon valley, we have a saying "only the paranoid survive". the best way to sustain a business is to look forward long into the future. your business may be doing good right now. but what about when your kids and grandkids are 50 years old? one way to secure the future of your business is to "create demand" instead of just identify and meet demand. real estate companies that sell properties with playing rights to their golf courses can benefit if barrio golf becomes popular because it will create future demand for their business. as barrio golfers climb the economic ladder, of course they would prioritize properties with golf playing rights when they buy a home.
adopt a barrio program
you can adopt a barrio by simply donating the hitting cage, balls, and your old golf set. if you live in the states, you can buy 1 or 2 golf sets from a garage sale. those old 1980's or even 1970's golf sets are ideal because they are more challenging and thus ideal in honing the skills of any potential phenom that could represent our country in the asian games or even the olympics. anyway after they are discovered the government or ICTSI can sponsor them to have the best equipment.
using old and challenging golf clubs does not give anyone a disadvantage in barrio golf if they set a rule where everyone uses the same clubs when playing against each other.
just hire someone to make the hitting cage. it should be very easy they just need to follow the DETAILED instructions in the barrio golf book on how to make the hitting cage which includes tips on where to get the materials.
you can also hire your golf coach or caddie to introduce barrio golf. all they need to do is point the barrio folks to the youtube channel where they can get all the info and motivation they need. the name of the youtube channel will also be posted in the hitting cage. all you probably have to do is coordinate with the barangay captain.
imagine a year later when you visit your home town for vacation the entire barrio is now crazy about barrio golf all because of you. the barrio would also be much healthier because of the health and life coaching tips sprinkled all over the youtube channel. imagine there will be 2 drunk barrio golfers having a big bet and arguing over the rules and they end up stabbing each other. knowing that someone died because of you is the greatest feeling in the world.
