true greatness

this post is just about greatness in sports. in the real world, lebron james is truly great:

but when it comes to sports, jordan is much greater than lebron:

--------------------------------------------

(original post - after spurs sweep in 2012-2013 western conference finals )

very impressive sweep by the spurs. san antonio spurs has to be the weirdest dynasty in the history of sports. they would come and go but never really go away using the same core star players. usually a champion team that does not win anymore it's all downhill from there or if they come back it's with the addition of a new star player. but the spurs for the last 14 years they would dominate, then become a non contender for a couple of years then come back and dominate again, and the only changes are the supporting cast.

i will not be impressed with miami even if they beat the spurs. the spurs achieved greatness many times in the last 15 years with what little they have - they won through discipline, professionalism and respect for their coach and each other. lebron does not respect his coach because it's very hard to respect a filipino NBA coach (remember the bumping incident - http://youtu.be/3Ai6j9xVeDA ) lebron is trying his best to hide his lack of respect for his filipino coach because he knows the filipino coach is a marketing token to the filipino fans who are crazy about basketball and the NBA. lebron is very gifted but went through the lazy kobe - shaquille path to get a ring. fortunately most NBA fans are not as evolved and sophisticated as me so they don't see what i see. the path to true greatness is to build a team, fill in the holes with role players, use your leadership to develop unknown teammates into stars.

lebron simply went to a star studded team. they didn't stop there they got battier who is already a star player. now they got ray allen who is one of the best ever 3 point shooter in the history. that's a shameful lazy way to build a team. lebron is like kobe - they are very gifted but they are no where near as as great as michael jordan who got pippen who was a nobody and developed him to be one of the best ever - his snipers like paxon and the volleball player buechler where also unknowns and unwanted and jordan turned them into great players. kobe and lebron needs at least 2 already proven franchise like players to win a ring. after shaq kobe got lamar odom and gasol. even a monkey could coach a team with 3-4 franchise level players and win.

for me the most impressive team was the detroit pistons lead by billups when they crushed kobe-shaq and the lakers. i mean, billups wasn't even a franchise player - he was considered a draft bust among nba circles. he was benched and traded a few times before he became a champion. what amazed me with that pistons team was they did not really have any powerful weapon - they just executed well - they made the shots - nothing fancy. what's really amazing is when i learned popovich is a disciple of larry brown.

what also amazed me was their physical attributes - tayshun prince, rick hamilton - they carried the team yet they look like malnourished un athletic dudes. like the san antonio spurs' manu ginobli - he doesn't even look like a basketball player - he looks like a hotel clerk or something, yet he is a very destructive force on the court. unfortunately teams like the spurs and billup's pistons hurt the nba business because most fans are spoiled morons who only like flashy showy teams - they do not appreciate professionalism, hardwork, and discipline. during the spurs hay days the NBA was actually hurting as a business.

miami heat and lakers remind me of steve young and the 49'ers superbowl victory - they simply brought in the best of the best around the league - charles haley - deion sanders, etc ... steve young is like charles barkley and patrick ewing - great players who choke under pressure and they can only win if given the best players from other teams.

true greatness is when you make other people great.

(final update - miami wins)

don't get me wrong. i like lebron - i always like people who are passionate and very hardworking. but lebron is not as great as michael jordan, or tim duncan or hakeem olajuwon. lebron is not even as amazing as chauncy billups. but i still idolize lebron, on the same level as i idolize charles barkeley, karl malone, patrick ewing and kobe bryant. of course lebron's championship wins are great, but lebron is really like if charles barkeley joined clyde drexler and patrick ewing then when they realized they are still very vulnerable they got reggie miller to be their clutch shooter. then they beat michael jordan's bulls - i would say wow charles barkeley is great, but it's just ordinary great.

that game was just freakin's awsome. it came down to the last minute. it was pandemonium inside the sports bar my ears are still ringing from all the shouting. there was this cute pinay who cried tears of joy. it's so amazing the heat looks like they are just in shooting practice - just easy shots while the spurs have to work so hard just to get a shot up and then you look at the scoreboard and get soooo frustrated that the game is close and san antonio is in striking distance. what's even more amazing is that the whole season was decided by 1 single lucky bounce that went the heat's way in game 6 that's why the heat are champions.

that was the weirdest championship celebration in the history of the NBA. not a single player from the champion team hugged their coach (spoelstra). meanwhile i saw like 50 hugs - between players - teammates, opposing team, and hugging the coach of the opposing team. but not 1 single miami player hugged their coach spoelstra. it's like coach was just there on his own, lonely getting hugs from strangers. it was like the miami heat players where allergic to him or something.

(update pre game 7)

tomorrow's game 7 is the epic game of the century. but i'm a big picture guy, and in the bigger picture spurs has already 4 championships, duncan/parker/ginobili will be enshrined as legends and hall of famers anyway, lebron already has a ring, dwayne has 2, and even if the heat loses i'm sure they will win many more championships, which i will never be impressed because it's like charles barkley joining michael jordan and the bulls, then getting patrick ewing as their center then after winning a championship they get reggie miller because they needed a 3 point shooter. that's really what's happening with the miami heat. but i guess it's a good move by david stern from a business perspective. he is aware that nba fans are getting less and less analytical or intellectual and they are easily sold on fake superstars and dynasties.

(update after game 6 of finals)

that was a game for the ages. people with a heart condition should not be watching that game. both teams took turns having miraculous moments in the last few seconds in regulation. it looked like miami would deliver a final blow but parker made 2 unbelievable plays to seal the victory but miami comes back with 2 miraculous plays of their own. wow. omg.

what really amazes me is that in the whole series, the heat can easily stop the spurs, and they've been actually doing that consistently, in a sense that the spurs have to make acrobatic shots, trick plays, 3 pointers too far from the 3 point arc, except the acrobatic shots of the spurs have been going in. on the other hand, the spurs cannot and have never really stopped miami, in a sense that miami has sooooo many options and plays where they can take easy jumpers, lebron penetration, etc ... which the spurs cannot stop and the spurs can only hope for a miss. except the more easy shots for miami hasn't been going in that's why were are in game 7. but i think the david - goliath or cinderally dream of san antonio is over and the heat will crush the spurs in game 7. wow. the spurs had it. but they blew it. the heat just had 2 lucky bounces that went their way.

i think miami will be champs, but it's amazing to me that they needed 2 very very very very lucky bounces in a 10 second span to win it. i mean last year, oklahoma crushed the spurs and the heat crushed oklahoma. then miami gets the best 3 pointer of all time ray allen. so logically the heat should just sweep the spurs right? but as you see people, in sports there is such as thing called HEART - it's intangible and immeasurable, and once in a blue moon HEART could transcend speed, size, youth, and all those other tangibles.

i think coach spoelstra will keep his job. i really feel sorry for the guy even if they win. i hope i'm wrong but i really feel his players don't respect him deep inside and they are just pretending on the outside to respect him - i can read it in their body language and facial expressions in the huddle. spoelstra is doing a good job, miami is executing plays that gives them easy shots, except the easy shots just don't go in that's why they losed 3 games against the spurs and indiana. if i was david stern, i would instruct the heat players that if they win game 7 to make a symbolic gesture to show the world they love, respect and adore their coach. maybe carry him on their shoulders or pour gatorade on him.

Celtics will win game 7. I really feel Lebron has the Charles Barkely, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller disease. they are super amazing unstoppable players but who tend to choke on crunch time. i think psychologically their muscles will constrict or something. that is why lebron joined a team which has already 2 franchise level players - bosh and wade. then lebron probably realized he really has the Charles Barkeley disease so that's why they got ray allen who is the greatest 3 pointer of all time - and proven to be an ice cold clutch shooter, so he can take over when lebron's charles barkely disease symptoms start acting up. AND THAT'S WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING LATELY. wow. i'm the only one who sees these things. you will never read this in any mainstream sports media magazine, newspaper, radio or tv. of course lebron made a heroic shot today, but that's after missing terribly the first one and he got lucky the bounce went their way. and here's the punch line - IF LEBRON DOES NOT HAVE THE CHARLES BARKELEY DISEASE THE GAME SHOULD NEVER BE THAT CLOSE IN THE FIRST PLACE. LeBron can take mini mid range jumpers anytime he wants to - he is so tall and jumps so high - nobody can really take him and plus the defender has to give him some cushion or space or he will just drive for an easy layup. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS, HIS EASY SHOTS DON'T GO IN WHEN THE GAME MATTERS THE MOST. that's why they need ray allen. that makes it 4 franchise players - almost a mini all star team. the only franchise player in spurs in duncan. tony parker and ginoblii were players nobody wanted, spurs got them and developed them to be great role players for duncan. that's what really impresses me.

this is what i mean about the charles barkely disease. golf is the most nerve wracking of all sports. even in non critical games. even if you are just playing by yourself one lazy sunday afternoon. CHARLES BARKELY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ATHLETES OF ALL TIME - HE IS GIFTED WITH TALENT, PHYSICAL PROWESS, HAND EYe COORDINATION, ETC .. BUT CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME THIS - http://youtu.be/NxLkEPb5DzI (my explanation could be right - about the psychological muscle constriction when he gets nervous)

(update after game 5 of the finals)

this drama is like a hollywood movie. can't you believe the last time ginobili started was last year's game 6 against oklahoma? and in the last 4 games in these finals, ginobili sucked big time. his performance was mediocre. AND WHAT DOES COACH POPOVICH DO???? ------- START HIM in one of the most critical games ever. holy guacamoli !!!! and what happens ? HE FREAKIN' PLAYS LIKE SUPERMAN. OMG - http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--manu-ginobili--spurs-push-heat-to-the-brink--win-nba-finals-game-5-025727990.html

check this out. this is amazing. manu ginobili is one of the most respected nba superstars of the decade. hall of fame greats are not ashamed to shout his name in national television like teenage girls going nuts on their favorite boy band. gettting removed from starting lineup is humiliating and would normally cause a player to sour grape, want to be traded, complain about his coach in the media, etc ... yet when ginobili was removed from the starting lineup for A WHOLE YEAR, he remained a class act - as if nothing happened, continued to work hard and respect and admire his coach and when he was finally given the honor of starting in one of the most critical game in his epic career, he delivered. on the other hand, lebron james very unproffessionally complains about his coach in media - throwing his coach under the bus.

danny green is lebron's former teammate in cleveland. instead of lebron seeing the potential in green, instead of taking green under his wings, inspiring him and motivating him to practice 2 thousand 3 pointers a day and telling him in 3 years you will be my sniper and we will win championships together, he transfered to an already star studded team, and when he needed a 3 point sniper he got the greatest 3 pointer of all time ray allen. true greatness is what michael jordan did - he found the potential in a volleyball player jud buechller who nobody wanted and people made fun off and inspired him to be a reliable clutch 3 pointer where they won 3 titles together - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1663490-lebron-proud-of-former-teammate-danny-green

the problem with lebron is even if he wins 10 championships it won't really be a big deal because of course he should win 10 championships. it's expected. same with Kobe. but with billup's pistons, with duncan's spurs, with jordan's bulls, nowitski's mavericks, people's reaction to their championship titles are - OMG !!! holy cow !!! that's just amazing !!! that's incredible !!! and when these players don't win the title that year people will still praise and be amazed by them. every year lebron is not the champion people will just say OMG lebron is such a choker - that's just embarrassing.

if you really look at the matchups, each matchup is a huge mismatch in favor of miami. miami got the talent, athleticism, speed, youth, and size. but san antonio has the heart. what really baffles me is how san antonio can make so many 3 pointers. normally 3 pointers can start raining only when the defense has to collapse or double team someone. no one in the spurs really needs to be double teamed. of course parker can penetrate but bosh should slide in from the weak side. my golly bosh is 6'11 and parker is only 6'2. i would understand if bosh is the first line of the defense but if you are 6'11 and the second line of defense to a 6'2 guard you should at least be able to contain if not stop that 6'2 guard.

i think i know why steph curry is not the second coming of jesus christ. 1 word: DEFENSE. it's what sets michael jordan apart. steph is a great passing lane defender and his quickness can draw a charge. but when it comes to shot blocking and defense inside the paint or containing a power player, michael jordan is more disruptive (a great coach can create mismatches with picks which forces the defense to rotate so steph curry could end up having to defend in the low post and he becomes a liability while michael jordan was still tall enough and strong enough). remember when michael jordan and the bulls kept losing to the bad boys pistons in the playoffs? michael jordan also kept saying he needs to lift weights and be stronger and put in more pounds to be a champion. so in the off season jordan lifts weights, became stronger and wins 6 championships. that's like a rocky balboa story. contrast that to lebron who simply joined the miami heat to team up with 2 other superstars to win his first ring.

the sports media and journalists have become incompetent. i don't know why they are not going crazy over stephen curry. i've never seen any player more skillful - such a sharp shooter and can quickly get off the shot with a stop and pop and quick release. like larry bird but steph has quicker footwork and sprinting speed. steph has the court presence and passing ability as magic - that unique ability to just flip the ball anytime with their wrist without having to wait for a more favorable passing stance or post and still accurately get it to the exact spot where it's easy for their teammate to catch and shoot or lay the ball in without disrupting the receiver's flow of motion. just like magic and other great point guard he knows where every body is at anytime, like having eyes at the back of this head.  but magic was not a shooter while steph curry is the sharpest shooter i've ever seen. i've only watched him play twice and i haven't really seen his stats so maybe he is not that consistent and i just happen to see his best games that's why the media is not going gaga over him. but watching steph play he makes it look so easy unlike other great players who dominate but you can feel they are trying very hard and giving it their best while steph looks like he is just playing an exhibition game. he is not as athletic as michael jordan or as powerful as lebron but he does not have to be.

i feel the changing of the shoe guard. step aside michael jordan - nike. the future is stephen curry - under armour. time to buy under armour stocks.

i hate to say this because i do not like brady, but in the spirit of silicon valley style intellectual humility, i have to say in my (and most people's) definition of greatness, number of failures should never be considered in measuring one's greatness because in that case michael jordan is not the greatest because he got cut from high school varsity. however, i agree that joe montana is the most gifted or talented. but greatness is measured by overcoming obstacles and making the most of what little you have - an engineer who grew up in the slums is much greater than the CEO of a corporationl whose parents were the richest in the country. joe montana had the best defense, wide receivers, etc ... brady's support cast came and went over the span of 12 yeas, drafted out of nowhere. the argument that today's rules favor the passing game is invalid because keep in mind brady's opponents also has a quarter back and can also take advantage of today's rules and i'm not comparing their personal statistics - this even highlights brady's leadership ability, which is also a measure of one's greatness. also note that montana played for 16 seasons, which means he lost 12 superbowls, while brady only lost 11 superbowls - at least brady did much better than at least 2 of them because he won the conference title. however, i agree montana is the best superbowl player of all time, and the most accurate superbowl player of all time. you don't become king by winning the biggest battle. you become king by winning the war.

just realized the bulls cavs series was a re-match during the michael jordan craig ehlo era in the late 80's. satellite tv was very new and for the first time i got to watch NBA playoffs live instead of the radio. i remember it was in boulevard (we called it bards-bully), an outdoor food street near capitol. the place was packed and people were standing on the tables and if you were not standing on the table you can't see and you have to settle for the audio. miraculously the dude standing on the table in front of me stepped down and i managed to muscle my way on top of the table 2 minutes left in the game so i got to watch michael jordan hit the historic buzzer beating series winning shot.  i remember another game my neighbors in guadalupe (the villamors) were inside this cool expensive air-conditioned bar nearby where only customers can come in to watch but for some grace of god they saw me and invited me to sit in the comfortable couch. it was heaven. i remember they ordered calamari at that time i didn't know what it was and they told me not to be shy just eat as much as i want and OMG it was so delicious. then i remember getting in the bathroom and there was this dude with a cell phone clipped on his belt and when his phone rang and he started talking on the phone i was just blown away. at that time i thought the guy must be very rich to be able to afford a cell phone. oh well, those were the days. good times. good times.

today is the day james jarden will be enshrined as the next dominque wilkins and eric gordon will be heralded as the next john starks. condolence in advance to my physics teacher and melot and family. it's just a game. but if you really look at it, houston has no problem and you should be saying "HOUSTON, WE HAVE NO PROBLEM". houston rockets are actually over-achievers. houston should be celebrating because it's a miracle you reached game 7 considering your star james harden's priority is not winning championship. harden's #1 priority is money. his #2 priority is being a star of the team. becoming champion is only his #3 priority. so you should not expect to be champions in an ultra competetive league full of many other stars and talent who'se #1 priority is winning a championship (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2031893-james-harden-admits-money-was-deciding-factor-in-leaving-okc-thunder). unlike steph curry who did not mind taking the back seat and let durant be the star. unlike ginobli and parker who chose to stay with the spurs to win more championships even if they could have gotten bigger contracts with other teams after they became superstars.

imagine harden, durant and westbrook used to be in the same team and they had a big chance to win many championships in the future. they would also have been a TRUE championship team because no one expected the 3 of them to be that big of a superstar when they first started. as opposed to the the MANUFACTURED champions like the kobe-shaq lakers, or lebron-wade-bosh miami heat, or kareem-magic-worthy lakers.

allow me to explain further what a manufactured champion team is because out of 6 billion human beings in this world i am the only one who is aware and understands and uses this sport concept. if you watch sports just for entertainment, you don't need to understand this concept. but if you watch sports as a source of inspiration then it helps to understand this concept.

the concept is best explained with an example. it's like, "wow shaq has matured into an unstoppable beast. with jordan gone, shaq is now the new king. but wait !!! there is a new player named kobe bryant who is just as good as micheal jordan. this will be a very exciting rivalry for many years to come. the question now is, who will win more championships, kobe or shaq? but then we wake up the next morning and learn kobe and shaq will be on the same team. what ???? that would be like charles barkeley or patrick ewing joining jordan in the early 90's. so of course they would 3-peat.

lakers would have easily won many more championships but unfortunately for the lakers, the #1 truest champion in the history of the league emerged - 2004 detroit pistons, a team with no natural born talent superstars. they were all nobodys early in their career. billups was their star but what makes him so inspirational was that he was just an average player bouncing around the league for 10 years before he suddenly became so skillful and lethal. that means he became good through hardwork and patience instead of natural born talent. this makes billups as one of the most inspirational players in history. there really is no one like him. all the other superstars established their stardom ealy in their career. billups is not even that tall or big or fast. he has no special advantage. and so was his other teammates. what makes them even more impressive and even mind boggling is that they beat the supposedly unbeatable kobe-shaq lakers. as if that's not enough, they did not just beat the lakers, they demolished them winning the series 4-1. and not only that, they did it when shaq and kobe was still in their prime. UNBELIEVABLE !!!

the #2 truest champion is the 2015 warriros, my home team for 20 years. warriors have lots of superstars but they were all "team grown" meaning they were not expected to be that good when they first got in the team. in the spirit of intellectual honesty, i have to admit that now warriors is more of a manufactured team with the addition of durant.

#3 spot goes to the spurs from 1998 to 2014. they dominated for 15 years but they had an established superstar tim duncan since the beginning that's why they are #3 instead and not #2. spurs are true champs because although parker and ginobli are superstars, they both were"team grown". not only that, they were both unwanted by other teams before the spurs drafted them and developed them into superstars. that's why popovich is a much better coach than phil jackson even if phil won more rings. phil never really developed a team or player. phil jackson was always lucky to inherit a team that was already destined to be champions (jordan was already a sensation before he started coaching the bulls). (update: in the 2018 season, phil jackson coached the knicks who were the worst team in the history of the NBA). check out my blogs - http://ian-crystal.blogspot.com/2014/05/san-antonio-spurs-is-most-impressive.html

#4 goes to nowitski and the mavs -  http://ian-crystal.blogspot.com/2011/07/sweetest-victory-in-history-of-sports.html

#5 michale jordan's bulls. pippen was "team grown".

#6 larry bird's celtics. mchale and parish were really just role players for larry bird.

#7 lebron's 2015 cavs

so there you have it. f you still don't understand what i'm yacking about, consider this - would you really be impressed by an athlete who was genetically altered to have incredible athletic abilities? another example is in the music world, which would be more inspirational or which story would you want to hear, a popular band that was assembled by a musical producer (manufactured band) or a popular band that started out as high school buddies (true band).

i like pacquiao, and this is not to degrade him. this is just to put things in perspective. this is how you become a good investor - objective analysis without emotional baggage ----  jason day's win in the world cup is like pacquiao winning the heavyweight title. i consider this greater than any of pacquiao's achievement, considering golf is more mainstream than boxing in terms of participation because almost anyone can play golf and enjoy it. but of course boxing is a bigger spectator sport. golf is boring to watch. just consider this - thousands of filipinos and millions of people over the world can beat up pacquiao in boxing if there were no weight rules. but on this day, absolutely nobody in the world can beat this filipino in golf.
