praise the lord !!! after 10 years of searching, i finally found a pepper grinder that works and is durable. i noticed that with the good grinder, the inner disc at the bottom does NOT RETRACT or go inward when you tighten the nut at the head. but with the bad grinder, the inner disc retracts or goes inward when you tighten the nut. if you happen to have the bad grinder, just remove the nut so the inner disc will protract outward to the correct position. but if you do this, large bits of pepper sometimes come out.
many stores sell the one in the bottom most photo. do not buy that because the tab for the square hole is made of PLASTIC and the hole easily becomes rounded. therefore, it can't anymore GRIP the square bar rod. so the rod can't turn to grind the pepper.
