check out this nissan sentra video from donut media
i thought it's because i'm just a wierdo for being amazed at my dad's 30 year old junky nissan sentra. turns out car experts all over the world are also amazed at this engineering gem. the engineers who built this car got fired and can never find work in the auto industry again for committing the mortal sin of making a car that lasts forever. it caused nissan to go bankrupt because it's fans never had to buy another nissan. it's a car that should only be built for a communist society. luckily for nissan, mexico did not require airbags and anti lock brakes until 2017 so they were able to continue building and selling it in mexico until 2017. i keep joking in facebook calling it a tesla but to be honest this car never stops to amaze me. it's 30 years old yet there is no oil leak, no coolant leak and the aircon is still freekin' cold. the last oil change was 6 months ago and the color of the oil is still brown. i've been driving it to toledo every week going up and down the strenous manipis and uling mountain roads.
i also think it's not weird to admire this 30 year old junk car because the personality trait is not that different from museum or history enthusiasts. why would the government spend millions to preserve old useless historical artificats and display them in museums and why would people pay to see them?
in ukraine my favorite past time is visiting old orthodox churches and medieval villages where the entire village is a museum and the houses contain the antique housewares and even clothes. i get this amazing feeling that i never feel anywhere else and i start imagining what it's like to live in those days. then i climax with an awesome kalibangon feeling then i go home to my apartment and take a pleasurable dump. i wonder if i'm the only one who is like this.
i also imagine genghis khan's generals subutai and batu khan crossing the steppes pillaging and slaughtering the ukrainians in mid 1200's which is really not that long ago because it's just 7 full times ago. and a full lifetime or a 100 years is really not that long. i'm 50 years old and it feels like i was just born yesterday. i also imagine napoleon's troops crossing the ukrainian steppes to invade russia in the beginning of the 1800's which is really just a short while ago. if i was a history teacher the most important thing i will do on the first day of each class is to make sure my students grasp the concept of time. when i was in school i felt jose rizal belonged to a very ancient era. it's only recently that i realized jose rizal was literally just a contemporary of my grandfather. if jose rizal was a golfer and was not executed, he would have still been young enough to beat my grandfather when my grandfather was already old enough to be a scratch golfer. in 1935, my grandfather would have been around 15 years old, which already old enough to be a scratch golfer and rizal would have been 74 years old, still young enough to beat a 15 year old in golf.
maybe it's really not that rare to be a history geek. just recently i went to toledo with my israeli friend. he was kind enough to take drone photos of my family's property. he was also a scuba diving instructor so i didn't expect him to be a history geek but on the way to toledo he would point out old churches that he visited. then we pass by a church that he has not visited and said he will come back one day to take pictures. so i told him to check out the facebook posts of my high school classmate who is a very gifted writer and posts about historical sites in cebu that people just ignore but is actually very interesting if you learn about it's history. he also taught the locals in toledo how to identify psychedelic shrooms and the locals were very thankful. i was also thankful to learn about psychedelic shrooms but i swear it's not the reason why my car rant suddenly segued into museums in ukraine, mongol hordes, jose rizal golfing with my grandpa, then cebu historical sites.
